Shropshire Grapples with Severe Flooding on January 5th, 2024
On Friday, January 5th, 2024, Shropshire faced significant flooding as the Severn River reached its peak levels. In Shrewsbury, the river surged to 4.69 meters, while Buildwas saw heights around 6.35 meters by 11 pm, and in Bridgnorth, it peaked at approximately 4.90 meters around 3:30 am.
Although some roads previously closed due to flooding are anticipated to reopen today, ongoing high river levels may persist in causing disruptions in the coming days. Despite the receding waters, the Severn’s levels are expected to maintain their elevated state.
Numerous thoroughfares in Shrewsbury, such as Smithfield Road, Chester Street, and Coton Hill, remain inaccessible due to flooding. Likewise, in Ironbridge, The Wharfage, Coalford, The Lloyds, and Ferry Road (near the Boat) are closed off.
To mitigate the impact, flood barriers have been installed in Frankwell and along The Wharfage in Ironbridge to contain the flooding.
Several parking areas have been shut down due to the flooding, including Frankwell Riverside, Frankwell Main, St Julian’s Friar’s, and The Gap car parks in Shrewsbury, along with Dale End Car Park and the Wharfage Car Park in Ironbridge.
Given the situation, Shrewsbury bus station remains closed on Friday. As an alternative, temporary bus terminals have been set up at New Park Road, below Beacalls Lane; Abbey Foregate car park; and Frankwell, near Theatre Severn.
Furthermore, adjustments have been made to the Park and Ride Services to facilitate transportation despite the flood conditions. New Park Road accommodates Harlescott Park and Ride drop-off and pick-up, Abbey Foregate car park manages Meole Brace Park and Ride, while Frankwell Island caters to Oxon Park and Ride services.
